Seven reasons you should do a working holiday in Australia

August 30, 2011

If you’re under the age of 30, and from one of many eligible countries around the world, getting a Working Holiday/Work & Holiday visa for Australia is almost unbelievably easy. Furthermore, if you’ve entered the workforce in the past few years, going to Australia to work for a year might even help further your career!

Even though they talk a lot about the GFC (Global Financial Crisis), Australia has remained remarkably sheltered from many of the negative economic effects other places in the world have experienced. After I graduated in 2009 (with a degree in advertising, an area not doing the best in such an economic climate) I could not find a job. When I returned from my trip to South America and my visits to Sweden and Jordan, I made the decision to move to Australia more for personal reasons (aka a Swedish boyfriend and a vague “non-goal” I’d had for the past ten years). It wasn’t until I got to Australia that I realized what a great decision it was for other reasons.

Find better job opportunities

The unemployment rate in Australia is half of what it is in the U.S. While in the States we have a job shortage problem (with five unemployed workers for every job opening), Australia has a skilled workers shortage (with less than two suitably skilled applicants for each job vacancy). It was likely for this reason that in Australia I was able to get two really amazing jobs that I could never have gotten so easily in the U.S., especially considering all my experience included was a degree and a few internships. And if I hadn’t been on a somewhat restrictive visa (you can only work six months at each employer) I probably would have been called back for even more jobs, even more quickly.

If you are moving to Australia to work in a specific field, you may have to send out a ton of resumes, but if you are based in any of the big cities you shouldn’t have too much trouble landing something. If you’re in any kind of a situation like I was in the States, you will just be happy to GET a job. If you’re not picky, you can easily get a job in retail, street marketing, telemarketing, or even fruit picking, farm work or hospitality, almost right away

And that’s only the tip of the iceberg of why Australia is such a great place for a Working Holiday.

Make some serious cash

The pay in Australia is incredible. Yes, the cost of living is higher, but after returning to the States I can look back and say that the ratio is much better in Oz. I made more money in one week at my job in Sydney then I made in a month at my much-less-glamorous job back in the States. (Full disclosure: Upon return to the States I at first only worked part time in retail — not by choice but because I couldn’t find anything else.)

The minimum wage is double what it is in the States, and if you’re in a regular office job you’re probably going to be making double that. In other words, I made three times more an hour at my job in Oz than I made at my first job upon returning to the States. (Again, full disclosure: I was not in the best area of the country to be looking for work, especially in my field, so I just kind of took what I could get to make some money until I could find something better.)

Gain valuable experience

My job in Sydney was AWESOME. I worked in my field (marketing). I got to be creative, meet and work with really cool people, learn a lot of new things and basically enjoy what I was doing. Not only did I gain some great experience, but I gained some great international work experience, which is never a bad thing.

My job in Perth was also interesting, fun and in my field. I again got to be very creative and involved, worked with some really cool people, and I learned a lot through all the responsibility I was given. And even though I made less money than in Sydney (still more than in the States), I got to basically make my own hours and work from home.

Enjoy a better work environment

The work/life balance at my job in Sydney was fantastic. (I actually worked a 9-5!) Australia in general does a good job of promoting work/life balance and a pleasant, often more laid back, office atmosphere. Everyone in my office was extremely friendly. I got all kinds of great perks (like flying around Australia, being treated to ridiculously nice meals, etc.), and there was free birthday cake at least once every week. Also they have really great paid vacation time, if you are able to enjoy that benefit. (Four weeks is the standard in Oz… And we’re happy to get two weeks?)

Explore a new country and culture

All that is not even taking into account the traveling I was able to do around the entire country. On the Work & Holiday visa, you can work as little or as long as you want (up to six months per employer), at as many jobs as you want. So as soon as you’ve saved some money (I saved a nice chunk of change after 5-6 months of work in Sydney), you can quit your job and go traveling!

Australians are so into travel themselves, you might even find a job that will let you take significant time off to travel. Or you might even join up with one of the many backpacker job opportunities that actually involve traveling (such as street marketing), where your travel costs and sometimes even accommodation are paid for as you travel around the country.

Live in one of the best cities in the world

There’s also the fact that many of Australia’s cities are considered some of the most liveable cities in the world. (UPDATE: In 2012 the four Aussie cities on the list apparently just became even more liveable, with Melbourne topping the list.) I had spent so much time in Sydney in my three visits to Australia that eventually I was ready to get out and see more of the country, but looking back I still can’t get over what a perfect place it is.

Sydney is a perfectly sized and geographically-appointed city, filled with fantastic parks, lined with spectacular beaches and anchored by an iconic harbor (Sydney Opera House and Harbour Bridge, anyone?). It’s a very liveable and easily navigated city — not too big or too small, with pretty good public transit — boasting great weather year-round, tons of diversity and incredibly friendly people. What’s not to like?

Melbourne, Adelaide, Brisbane and Perth all claim similar near-perfection.

Embrace a lucky lifestyle

There’s a reason Australia is one of the happiest countries in the world. Better job opportunities, more money, fantastic work/life balance and quality of living, diversity, friendly people, excellent lifestyle, great cities to live in, and spectacular places to travel to experience great natural beauty, wildlife, history and epic adventures… Have I convinced you yet?

If Australia is at the top of your travel wish list, or if you’re dying to go traveling but you aren’t sure about putting your career on hold, then working abroad might just be the best decision for you!

Thanks so much for all this info! I’m thinking about making the move to Australia (from CA) with a work and holiday visa and spending a year down there. I graduated college in 2009 as well, and I’ve been working in a corporate office ever since. While I’m lucky to have a good job at a good company, I’m in dire need of something new. I really want to live abroad, and from my research (which led me here!) it looks like Australia is a good option for Americans. I’ve just been going back and forth on whether or not I should leave it all behind and make the big move! It was great to read about your experiences…Your 7 reasons may have just sold me completely!

Thank you so much for blogging about your experience. I, too, am interested in obtaining a work & holiday visa. Did you use an agency to help you find employment, accommodations, etc.? Since I don’t know anybody in Australia, I worry about how I will get settled once I get there. Thanks for any advice you have on resources available.

    • September 16, 2011 10:07 am

Hi Lily! Glad to hear you’re considering it 🙂 I have written about a lot of those details (employment, housing) on this site, under the Work Abroad section. (For example, here’s the post on job hunting: https://girlunmapped.wordpress.com/work-abroad/work-and-holiday-visa-australia/job-hunting/)

Specifically, I didn’t really use any agencies. I did at a couple points try a backpacker job agency and a recruitment company. Depending on where you are and what kind of job you are looking for, these could be a good option. However, in my case, they didn’t really work out for me. Both of the jobs I had I got on my own, and I found them on sites like seek.com.au (like monster/careerbuilder/etc.) and gumtree.com.au (like Craigslist). I found my both of my apartments on gumtree as well.

Let me know if you have any other questions, and good luck! You will meet people and make friends in Oz almost immediately — it’s just a friendly place 🙂

    Hi again!
I have a couple questions for you 🙂 What did you do for health insurance while in Oz? And what about cell phone service?

Thanks so very much for your helpful feedback!

    • September 25, 2011 7:29 pm

      Hey again!

I actually kept my health insurance from the US because it was technically usable at some places in Oz. I never used it though. When I was in Australia a couple years ago I did go to the doctor once, but I didn’t even use my insurance. I think then the visit and some antibiotics was only like $50. This past time in Australia, my boyfriend had to go to the “hospital” once after his eardrum popped when scuba diving. Even then, with two different prescriptions, I don’t think it cost him that much. (And again he didn’t use any insurance, even though Sweden supposedly has some kind of health ins. agreement with Oz).

I’d say for regular doctor visits it’s not really necessary, but if you are worried about anything extreme happening, or if you’re going to go traveling and want to be prepared for any emergency situations (such as having to be airlifted by a helicopter after falling and breaking your hip in the Outback — something we did witness happen to someone — at a price tag of $20,000) then you might want to consider getting some kind of travel insurance. I used World Nomads when I was in South America and realize that, while I was lucky we didn’t have any emergencies, it probably would have been smart to have it again when I did my month-long road trip in Oz. So something to consider.

And for mobile service… I used Vodafone. I think they’re all pretty comparable, but I’ve heard that Telstra or even Optus is better. Once we got out of the big cities, and especially away from the east coast, we seemed to almost *never* have service! I think Telstra is supposed to have the best coverage overall. Anyway, just head into a shop (you can buy a pretty cheap phone if you don’t already have one) and get a prepaid plan. You just recharge every month, and you can do that almost anywhere. For $30/month you get a ridiculous amount of minutes (and, at least with Vodafone, it’s even cheaper to call the US than within Oz!).

Thank you so much for sharing your experience with us! I’ve been planning to go to Oz on a work and holiday visa for almost two years now, and I would go right now, but I have to wait until I’ve turned 18, which is in March next year… 😦
This is helping me A LOT, everything you’ve written about your stay in Oz has, so thank you 🙂
At the moment, I’m living in Thailand, which I have been since early 2004, but my nationality is Sweden.
    Again, Thank you!

Really nice of you to be sharing your experience with us. I’m currently in Australia and can attest to all what you’ve said. Unlike the US where I was earning $1200 a month working as a disability working for the state of Illinois, I’m making on the average $1000 a week working 5 days (sometimes even less) a week for a temp agency. YOU THINK ABOUT IT AND IF YOU’RE STILL NOT CONVINCED, I’LL FORWARD YOU MY PAY SLIP. LOL

Hey! Thank you so much for writing this blog! I’ve been doing research for the past year to do a working holiday. I currently work on a cruise ship in Hawaii as a youth counselor (although I was a photographer before that) and was waiting for my friend to go with me. Now that’s she’s been promoted to a 40000 job, I doubt she’s coming with me. I was looking at the different program options, and many of them offer a group you can travel with. Do you recommend that? I had Australian teens a few weeks ago and kept their contact information. They suggested I try looking on my own as well. I graduated with a degree in advertising, though, like you and was curious as to the names of the companies you worked at. They sound fabulous! Any information would truly be appreciated!

    Hi,

Just wanted to let you and other know, I used your blog as my primary source of advice for a working holiday in Australia since there isn’t much comprehensive advice or experience out there by Americans. And it was super helpful, but I think a little out of date at this point (believe it or not).

Both before and after doing my whv I extensively searched the net trying to get a realistic idea of what the job situation, more than anything else, is like for people on a whv right now. I feel that things have changed a bit since many blogs and reviews were written, so I just wanted to put a little more up-to-date information out there.

I arrived in Australia in Sydney on Feb 5, so I’ve been here for about 7 weeks now. I intentionally came near the end of summer because I wanted to get a job first thing, and figured that was when people would probably start hiring (also something people on the internet had suggested). Although I haven’t even been here 2 months yet, from what I’ve experienced and the numerous people I’ve talked to, it seems like the job market has slowed down in Australia, particularly for people on a whv. I’ve been looking primarily for any type of office work, and I have about a year of administrative assistance on my resume, a college degree, and 3 years of customer service. I applied for over a hundred jobs online and am listed with 3 different temp agencies, but am only now finally getting a bite from a call center. Some young Australian college graduates have told me that many of their friends are having a hard time finding work – or at the very least, work that is suitable for someone with a degree (so that may be taking jobs away from the lowest rung, the whv’ers).

Many other people in my hostel have found it difficult to find work for over the past month, and though many think things are now picking up, there are a few more things I think should be put out there. People on a whv are much more likely to get passed over for jobs because of the 6 month limit, even in major cities. They tend to only want people who are experienced – even if it’s a cleaning or cafe job. In addition, the government has a few programs designed to take money from people on whv without a very reasonable justification (in my opinion). Many people know you need an RSA to serve alcohol (which you have to pay as much as $120 for and must do again for each different state you’re in), they often don’t know that you basically need it to serve any food at all, since most establishments at least serve wine. More interestingly, unless you’ve worked with a coffee machine before, cafes will also require anyone on a whv to have attended a “coffee making school” (though apparently they don’t require this for citizens).

Likewise, though not state sponsered, it seems as though farm work has become quite competitive. Because many nationalities need this to get their 2nd year visa, these jobs have become surprisingly hard to get, and, in addition to “commission only” fundraising schemes, have attracted some vultures and scam artists who make good money ripping off too-trusting whv kids. My current hostel owner used to advertise for a farm outside of Sydney – until he found out that kids were paying to go there, had to pay for accomodation on a farm far from anywhere, and then told that there “wasn’t work at the moment”, not hired, and not paid.

So I guess, more than anything, for anyone who wants to do a whv and definitely get work and get it quickly, make sure you have some relevant experience before you hop on the plane. Work in a cafe, or a bar, or a office (though these jobs seem universally harder to get), or for a big international chain of some sort, but understand that the market doesn’t seem to have as big an appetite as it used to – and Australians are increasingly becoming more protective about putting one another first before foreigners.

    Hello everyone,

I have been in Australia for 3 months now and except for a nanny job and some experience on a horse ranch, I have tremendous difficulties to find an office job. Currently I am in Melbourne where I can luckily stay for free with my uncle. I have a Master in Psychology obtained with honours, 3 years of experience as an HR Officer for an international pharmaceutical company and 2 years experience as an IT Training Coordinator at the University of Brussels (I am from Belgium) during a change management project.

I have applied over 150 times for different functions such as receptionist, data entry clerk, assistant, administrator, … not even functions that are on my level … but except for an offer from a commission only marketing company, I only got rejection letters. Daily. Not one single person called me to interview me and I have a Master and 5 years of working experience in a professional environment. I went to every recruitment agency and only one (out of 7) was willing to see me. All the other agencies told me I could only get an appointment if I would be invited by a consultant.

Today, after another rejection letter, I contacted one of the agencies for an explanation. And the consultant answered very honestly: if you don’t have working experience in Australia or the USA, the client will not even bother to look at your resume, no matter how good your skills are.
So basically if you are coming to Australia on a whv and you are a non American, your only options are: au pair, farm work, fruit picking, hospitality, sales on commission only, … unless you are very well connected or rich of course.

And as Heather pointed out, employers tend to take advantage of the young backpackers (making them work 7d on 7 for a ridiculous wage for example).

So, basically, what I am trying to say is, if you are coming to Australia in the hope to find an office job with a whv, be prepared to be dissapointed. It might take you months.

I continue looking and applying and I am hoping for the best.

Each search engine has a unique algorithm or secret system with which they
use to determine the value of a webpage or site. If an SEO
company advertises a large amount of clients but yet only displays a set few of testimonials,
ask them why or even better ask the owners of these websites.
This is easy – especially if you’re a seasoned article marketer.

Should the sellung individuasl never make this call, the original dealership will never know the car wwas
sold, that the auto extended warranty was not used, and, therefore, never issue a refund.
Of course, it would be nice if everything went well and you did nott hqve to walk out three tumes
or spend hours haggling over the deal. Your time is valuable to you; make the dealer respect your time by doing as much work for youu before you arrive.

Sure it looks like the dealer paid it,but every dealer gets in back in their monthly advertising

Smaller Earth has a program where they will help me get all of the financial and legal stuff situated, and will take us out for our first week in Sydney. What are your thoughts on this? Is a program like that worth it?
